Brilliant Young Minstermen beat Fylde

24th October 2019

Goals from Reiss Harrison and Brandon Finn helped York pull off a fantastic 2-0 victory against AFC Fylde at Wigginton Road.

York started quickly and were ahead after just seven minutes. Harrison headed in at the back post after Fylde’s keeper parried a shot straight into the winger's path.

Luke Jones thought he was in the clear twice in quick succession, however the linesman put his flag up on both occasions.

Fylde had a flurry of corners on the half hour mark but City’s defence continued to hold firm. Fylde also had a penalty appeal turned down from the referee after a possible handball incident.

Finn had a great chance to add a second for City just before the break but his shot was straight at the keeper meaning City went in 1-0 up at the break.

York skipper Charlie Jebson-King whipped in a dangerous ball from the left after the interval but his cross just evaded both Harrison and Finn in the penalty area.

Jones then had another one on one, this time onside, but his shot was saved.

With 20 minutes to play City made it 2-0. A corner swung in by Jebson-King dropped right at the feet of Finn in the middle of the box who placed the ball into the bottom corner, doubling City’s lead.

Jones almost made it three for City but his shot went straight at the keeper. Finn then had a huge penalty appeal waved away by the referee as Finn went down in the box.

Jake Teale didn’t have much to do all game but later on he made a smart stop to keep his clean sheet in-tact.

Fylde pushed for a goal back but City held on for the points and a much-deserved victory.

Youth team manager Tim Ryan said after the game: “That was the best performance of the season from the lads. We mixed the side up slightly today and I was really pleased with the whole squad.

“The two strikers today missed a few chances but it would be more of a problem if they weren’t getting into those areas. I’ll keep encouraging them to get into those goal scoring positions and eventually they’ll both get a flood of goals.

“Fylde have scored a lot of goals in their last few fixtures. To keep them out is brilliant. The back three as well as the keeper were really dominant and really enthusiastic to defend.”
