Summer signing Jake Wright was on target as City suffered a 7-1 home defeat against a strong Barnsley side.

The former Harrogate Town striker gave City a lead that lasted 16 minutes but Barnsley hit back in spectacular style and scored three goals in five minutes shortly before the interval.

Barnsley had arrived at Bootham Crescent under the guidance of new German coach Daniel Stendel and his 21 man squad included 19 players who had figured for the Tykes in the Championship last season.

It was always going to be a tough challenge for City who were also without the services of new strikers Jordan Burrow (calf) and Macaulay Langstaff (illness) and defenders Tom Allan (knee) and Kallum Griffiths (ankle).

Wright opened the scoring for City when chesting home a cross from Jon Parkin in the 21st minute. He had seen another 'goal' ruled out for offside just moments earlier.

But Barnsley stepped up their game and equalised in the 37th minute through Tom Bradshaw after Kieffer Moore's initial save had been blocked by Adam Bartlett.

Parkin might have restored City's lead moments later but for a well-timed tackle in the penalty box which put the ball out for a corner.

Brad Potts finished a swift counter-attack with a neat finish to put Barnsley ahead in the 41st minute and Moore tapped home to make it 3-1 soon after when Bartlett over-stretched trying to keep out a long-range shot.

Barnsley coach Stendel made 10 changes at the interval and City introduced Alex Kempster as a replacement for Wright.

Mamadou Thiam struck the underside of the City bar soon after the re-start and Victor Adeboyejo scored Barnsley's fourth in the 57th minute with a shot that beat Bartlett at his near post.

Striker Flynn McNaughton limped off the field just four minutes after being introduced as a replacement for former Barnsley striker Parkin.

City defender Hamza Bencherif handled in the penalty area in the 73rd minute allowing George Moncur to score from the spot.

Thiam made it 6-1 with 12 minutes to play when curling a shot past Bartlett from 18 yards.

Dylan Mottley-Henry completed the scoring for Barnsley in the 80th minute when escaping the attentions of City defenders on the edge of the penalty area and tucking the ball home.
