Goals from strikers Jon Parkin and Macaulay Langstaff secured a 2-1 victory for City in today's opening pre-season fixture at Shildon AFC.

Manager Martin Gray named 22 players for the trip to the Northern League Division One side and swapped nine at the halftime break.

However, defender Tom Allan suffered a knee injury just four minutes after his introduction as a substitute and is now a doub for Tuesday's home friendly against Barnsley.

Allan's injury, suffered in a challenge with a Shildon striker, led to the substituted Clovis Kamdjo returning to the field and playing nearly a full 90 minutes.

Part-timers Shildon took a shock lead after 11 minutes when striker Danny Earl beat City goalkeeper Adam Bartlett with a half volley from 25 yards.

And there was another scare for City in the 21st minute when Russ Penn inadvertently headed against his own post attempting to clear a freekick.

City settled as the first half wore on and Parkin equalised in the 24th minute with a towering header from a Vinnie Steels cross.

City then appealed in vain for a penalty six minutes later when new signing Wes York was brought down in the box by defender Daniel Moore.

Striker Langstaff put City ahead four minutes before the interval, shooting past Newbrook from eight yards after good work by winger York.

The former Gateshead striker nearly scored again soon after when his header was saved by goalkeeper Shaun Newbrook.

Kamdjo, who is currently out-of-contract but hoping to secure a new deal, had been substituted with nine other players at the interval but was soon back in action due to Allan's injury.

The Cameroon-born defender was involved in controversy in the 57th minute after fouling Shildon striker Danny Earl on the edge of the City penalty area.

Referee John Matthews angered the home supporters by ignoring penalty appeals and awarding a freekick which was fired into the City wall by Matty Robson.

Striker Jordan Burrow so nearly doubled City's lead in the 78th minute but his powerful header, from a Sean Newton corner, was tipped onto the crossbar by the Shildon goalkeeper.

Jake Wright was also denied by the Shildon goalkeeper in the closing stages when his close-range shot brought an excellent save.
