TRIALIST Joe Tait was on target as City secured a 1-1 draw against Championship side Leeds United in tonight's pre-season friendly at Bootham Crescent

Centreback Tait, who rejected a new deal at Spennymoor Town this summer, gave City the lead with a 24th minute header from a Sean Newton corner.

He was substituted at the interval but afterwards manager Martin Gray said: "He has done well, we have lost Tom Allan with an injury in pre-season, and competition for places is healthy."

Substitute Sam Dolby equalised for Leeds the 57th minute but the result and the performance was still a source of great encouragement for City supporters.

Leeds' side included former City striker Ryan Edmondson - who was sold to the Championship club after making his first team debut last season - and York-born midfielder Jack Clarke.

Other notable faces in the Leeds side were summer signing Lewis Baker, who is on loan from Chelsea, Japanese international midfielder Yosuke Ideguchi, and England under-21 internationals Ronaldo Vieira and Tom Pearce.

City enjoyed the better of the first half and could easily have been leading by more than one goal at the interval.

A Newton freekick was saved by goalkeeper Kamil Miazek and striker Macaulay Langstaff headed narrowly over the bar from close-range in the opening 20 minutes.

City took the lead after Langstaff seized on a loose throw-in and forced a corner under pressure from Laurens De Bock. Newton's corner found Tait who headed past Miazek at the far post.

City goalkeeper Adam Bartlett was not tested until seven minutes before the interval when saving low from a Baker freekick.

But with Leeds pressure building in the final stages of the half, he came to City's rescue when dashing off his line to block a shot from Jamie Shackleton with his chest.

City might have doubled their advantage at the start of the second half but Jordan Burrow's close range header struck the legs of substitute goalkeeper Will Huffer and Langstaff's follow-up header hit the crossbar.

Dolby levelled for Leeds with a calm finish at a corner after Mateusz Klich's initial shot struck the crossbar.

Manager Gray made six substitutions midway through the second half and City spent more time defending than attacking.

However, it was ultimately a satisfying night for City in front of a bumper 4,400 crowd.
