York skipper Sean Newton scored two in the opening eight minutes as the Minstermen picked up a 2-0 victory over Kettering Town at Bootham Crescent in the Vanarama National League North.

The first action of the game saw York win a penalty inside of five minutes when Olly Dyson was tripped over in the 18-yard box by Luke Graham.

Captain Sean Newton stepped up and made no mistake as the Minstermen scored their first penalty in the league since February 2019 as they gained an early advantage in the contest.

Two minutes later and it got even better for Steve Watson’s men when Newton stepped up for a free-kick, which the skipper excellently struck past Kettering goalkeeper, Adam Collin for his second of the evening.

The hosts came close to adding a third when the ball fell to Dyson who tried to sneak a shot in at the near-post, but Collin managed to make the save.

It was the Poppies turn to have a penalty appeal, but the referee quickly waved it away as the visitors had to settle for a corner.

Jake Cassidy then tried his luck after controlling a long ball played up to him; however, his weak shot was easily saved by Collin.

It was the visitors’ turn to try their look when Kyle Perry attempted a spectacular over-head kick which flew over the crossbar.

The Minstermen nearly counter-attacked their way to a third but Harry Bunn’s shot went across the face of goal and wide.

Ben Milnes’ free-kick for the visitors went comfortably over the crossbar.

Paul Cox’s men came very close to pulling a goal back but Pete Jameson kept the ball out as the score remained 2-0.

Cassidy nearly gave the hosts the perfect end to the first half until he was denied by the feet of Collin.

The visitors had the first effort on target in the second-half when Jameson comfortably saved a header.

Game was delayed due to Gary Stohrer being down injured.

The Minstermen came close to adding a third with just over 10 minutes remaining when Redshaw broke in behind but was denied his York goal as Collin made the save.

The referee blew the full-time whistle as the Minstermen hung on for a 2-0 victory against the Northamptonshire side.
