A JON Parkin double and a first clean sheet in 17 games completed back-to-back victories for York City over North Ferriby United in Vanarama National League North.

Parkin, who also bagged three against United on Boxing Day, took his goal tally for the season to 23 and was unlucky not to score a second hat-trick in a week.

Referee Dean Watson disallowed the third 'goal' when opting instead to award a freekick to City and a red card to United defender Jake Skelton.

Parkin, who was fouled on the edge of the penalty box by Skelton, had still managed to roll the ball over the goalline yet referee Watson refused to play any advantage.

City had gone ahead on 31 minutes when Parkin scored with a downward header from a David Ferguson cross.

Only moments earlier, striker Amari Morgan-Smith had forced a good low save from United goalkeeper Ross Durrant with a curling shot that looked destined to sneak inside the far post.

On loan midfielder Alex Pattison produced yet another impressive display and was involved in many of the good things City produced.

It needed a well-timed lunge from United defender Jack Walters to prevent Pattison firing home when City were pressing for a second goal just before the interval.

With captain Sean Newton again ruled out by injury, manager Martin Gray had named an unchanged line-up for City's first league game of 2018.

North Ferriby manager Chris Bolder, meanwhile, made four changes with former City defender Ben Clappison, Jamie Forrester, Brett Agnew, and Alex Davidson replacing Jake Picton, Callum Rzonca, Bobby Johnson, and Jerome Slew in the side beaten 4-1 by City at Grange Lane on Boxing Day.

City supporters were up-in-arms when Parkin's 'goal' was disallowed for Skelton's foul in the 69th minute. Pattison was unable to convert the subsequent freekick.

However, it took only seven minutes for City to find the net again - Parkin firing into the roof of the net from 12 yards after Durrant failed to catch a high ball into the box from fullback Josh Law.

Although substitute Jerome Slew came close to scoring for Ferriby with a shot that shaved the outside of the post in the 74th minute, City held on to record a first clean sheet since the 2-0 victory over Stockport County at Bootham Crescent on September 9.

The Minstermen have moved up to ninth in the league table - and remain three points outside the play-off zone ahead of Saturday's trip to Darlington.
