City suffered a 1-0 defeat against FC United of Manchester United tonight in Vanarama National League North.

Striker Connor McCarthy scored the only goal of the game after 61 minutes to leave the club's play-off hopes hanging in the balance.

Rivals Chorley and Spennymoor Town only managed draws tonight which leaves City two points outside the top seven with two games to play. However, both Chorley and Spennymoor still have games in hand.

Striker Alex Kempster and midfielder Alex Pattison both missed out on the game after picking up injuries against Gainsborough Trinity last weekend. Defender Connor Brown was omitted and teenage winger Vinnie Steels dropped to the bench.

Striker James Gray returned to the starting line-up along with Josh Law, Jonny Burn, and Connor Smith. Striker Louis Almond was back on the bench after recovering from a hamstring injury.

City adopted a 3-5-2 formation with captain Sean Newton playing in attack alongside Gray.

After weathering a period of early pressure from the home side, City began to create the better opportunities but were unable to break the deadlock.

Midfielder Law twice went close - forcing a one-handed save from Lloyd Allinson with an angled drive and shooting wide after a good move started by Simon Heslop.

Defender Hamza Bencherif lobbed the ball over Allinson into United's net but the 'goal' was ruled out for offside and it needed a well-timed tackle from Scott Kay to end a determined run into the area by Adriano Moke.

United's best chance of the first half fell to striker Craig Lindfield on 24 minutes but, fortunately for City, he shot straight at Adam Bartlett after a cross from Kay.

Lindfield threatened again at the start of the second half when heading a freekick from Steve Irwin inches wide of the post.

Bencherif then flicked the ball against the United post from a Newton corner.

Just past the hour mark, City fell behind when Kay exchanged passes with Steve Irwin in the penalty area before squaring to McCarthy who scored a simple tap-in.

It nearly got worse for City moments later when Irwin's 25 yard drive took a wicked deflection off a City defender and bounced back off the crossbar.

City might have levelled with seven minutes to play but goalkeeper Allinson got down well to push a 25 yard drive from Jonny Burn around the post.
