A LATE volley by Darryl Knights denied York City victory at Tamworth in Vanarama National League North.

City looked on course for a first victory in three games when Aidan Connolly scored his fourth goal of the season with 17 minutes to go.

But Knights, who also scored a late goal against City at Bootham Crescent earlier in the season, struck an 89th minute equaliser from the edge of the penalty box.

With striker Jon Parkin ruled out of the game due to his problem with artificial pitches, manager Martin Gray opted to switch his formation to a 4-5-1 with Connolly and Connor Smith - starting only his second game for the club - pushing forward from midfield.

Tamworth created the early opportunities with striker Bradley Reid a frequent aerial threat but unable to find the target.

Captain Luke Jones might have scored for Tamworth in the 15th minute when his header from a corner was headed off the line by City defender Connor Brown.

City, who were missing Parkin's physical presence in the final third, created their best opportunities towards the end of the first period.

Smith forced Tamworth goalkeeper Jack Stevens into a fingertip save when flashing a shot towards the top corner of the net and Raul Correia was unlucky not to score when a back-heeled effort was hacked off the line after Stevens fumbled a corner from Sean Newton.

The Minstermen applied pressure at the start of the second half and a header from defender Hamza Bencherif at a corner hit the post.

But Tamworth also hit the post soon after through an Aman Verma header which then struck goalkeeper Adam Bartlett on the shoulders and rolled into touch.

Tamworth goalkeeper Stevens spared the blushes of defender Sam Coulson who nearly turned a cross from City substitute James Gray into his own net in the 71st minute.

But City's supporters were celebrating just two minutes later when Connolly struck a low shot past Stevens from 25 yards.

Tamworth refused to give up the fight, however, and their late pressure was rewarded when Knights produced a stunning shot from the edge of the area that whistled past goalkeeper Bartlett into the roof of the net.
