Substitute Macaulay Langstaff opened his goal account as City lost 2-1 against Alfreton Town this afternoon.

The Minsterman paid the price for conceding two goals in two minutes just before the quarter hour mark.

Striker Tom Denton opened the scoring for Alfreton with a far post header at a freekick and winger Curtis Bateson doubled the advantage after pushing his way past Kallum Griffiths and taking the ball around goalkeeper Adam Bartlett.

Alfreton were also awarded a penalty in the 58th minute after City captain Sean Newton was adjudged to have tripped Bateson.

However, Richard Peniket's spotkick was saved low by Bartlett and City - buoyed by the introduction of substitutes Jon Parkin and Langstaff - began to show signs of a fightback.

The two substitutes linked-up to get City back in the game in the 68th minute. Parkin nodded on Bartlett's long kick and Langstaff - who joined the club this summer from Gateshead - spun-off his marker before coolly slotting the ball inside the Alfreton goalkeeper's right hand post.

City looked the more dangerous in the final 22 minutes and defender Joe Tait headed over following a ball into the box by Russ Penn.

Striker Parkin went closest to grabbing an equaliser but his goalbound shot, following good work on the right by winger Wes York, was steered off target by Alfreton rightback James Clifton.

Manager Martin Gray made only one change to the side that beat Stockport County in midweek with midfielder Adriano Moke replacing the injured Simon Heslop (bruised ribs).

Centreback Tom Allan, who had recovered from a knee injury, was among the substitutes for the first time since his summer move from Alfreton.

City suffered an early injury setback - for the second game in a row - when winger Alex Kempster was hurt in a challenge with Alfreton captain Luke Shiels and was replaced by David Ferguson.

City created few openings in the first half although Hamza Bencherif headed over the crossbar and Jordan Burrows sliced the ball wide at corners.
