Southport 1 York City 1

CAPTAIN Sean Newton’s late goal earned a point for York City against ten man Southport.

Newton’s 82nd minute equaliser arrived just three minutes after Southport striker Jack Sampson had been shown a red card for elbowing City defender Hamza Bencherif.

City had fallen behind seven minutes into the second half when Southport midfielder Gary Roberts latched onto a long ball from Curtis Jones and lobbed goalkeeper Jon Worsnop.

The loss of midfielder Adriano Moke with a thigh injury after just 18 minutes had been a cruel setback for the Minstermen.

Manager Gary Mills later revealed that Moke would be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

Bencherif had returned from suspension to replace Jassem Sukar in the only change to the City side that beat Nuneaton Town seven days ago. Striker Jon Parkin was back on the bench after missing three games with a calf injury.

City enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half but were frustrated by a dogged and well-organised home defence.

Newton was unlucky not to score shortly before the interval when his 25 yard drive was tipped over the crossbar by Southport goalkeeper Iain Turner.

Clear-cut opportunities were thin on the ground after the break but Roberts’ goal in the 52nd minute put all the pressure on City.

However, once Sampson was dismissed for elbowing Bencherif in an aerial challenge on the halfway line, the game swung firmly City’s way.

Newton equalised three minutes later with a stunning cross-come-shot that sailed over goalkeeper Turner into the far corner of the net.

Substitute Parkin nearly won it for City in stoppage time but his half volley was pushed around the near post by Turner.
