York City moved up to fifth in the Vanarama National League North table after a 1-1 draw against Alfreton Town at Bootham Crescent.

Man of the match Simon Heslop scored after just five minutes of the game - but former City defender Tom Allan equalised seven minutes before the interval.

With leading goalscorer Jon Parkin suspended, striker Alex Kempster made his first start as manager Martin Gray made one change to the side beaten seven days earlier at Curzon Ashton.

City took the lead when Heslop scored with a low angled drive following a quick freekick on the edge of the area by Aidan Connolly.

Kempster nearly doubled City's lead in the 19th minute but his far post effort from an Alex Pattison corner was blocked on the goalline.

Alfreton might have levelled in the 34th minute when striker Nyal Bell got beyond defender Jonny Burn but goalkeeper Adam Bartlett rushed off his line to make a crucial challenge.

However, the visitors equalised just four minutes later when Allan emerged from a crowded penalty box to meet a freekick delivered from near the halfway line with a close range header into the roof of the net.

Allan threatened to score again, just after the interval, when rising at the far post to meet a freekick from Brendon Daniels. Fortunately for City, his header bounced wide of the opposite post.

City enjoyed plenty of possession in the second half and created their best opportunities in the later stages of the game.

A goalbound shot from Connolly was blocked after good work by substitute Louis Almond and Kempster. Almond then flicked the ball over his marker before hitting a first time shot too close to goalkeeper Viktor Johansson.

There was a brief scare for City in the 83rd minute when Burn under-hit an attempted back pass - however Bartlett, again, came to the rescue and tackled Town winger Cieron Keane on the edge of the penalty area.
