York made it back-to-back league victories in the National League North with a 4-2 win over Bradford (Park Avenue) at the Horsfall Stadium.

Akil Wright handed York the lead after 20 minutes, but Oli Johnson responded for the home side with a header, before goals from Michael Duckworth and Mitch Hancox gave City a comfortable 3-1 lead heading into half-time.

Former City man Harrison Hopper handed Bradford a way back into the game early in the second half, but Hancox’s second goal of the game secured all three points for City late on, which sees York secure back-to-back wins in the league for the first time under John Askey.

Mark Bower’s Bradford side came into this fixture off the back of Saturday’s impressive 5-0 win over Alfreton Town, which was their third win from their previous four league games.

He named a strong squad to feature against the Minstermen, who included former City player Sam Fielding, as well as Hopper and Johnson.

York recorded their first win in four attempts on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Blyth Spartans and Askey was hoping his side could make it back-to-back wins in the National League North.

Askey made only the one change ahead of kick off from the side that featured against Blyth. Kurt Willoughby started as a lone-striker ahead of Clayton Donaldson, who dropped to the bench.

The home side had a brilliant opportunity to take the lead at the Horsfall Stadium after only eight minutes. After hitting York on the counter-attack, Jameson pulled off a finger-tip save to deny Adam Nowakowski from close-range, after meeting a ball in from the left-hand side on the volley.

Mitch Lund fired over on the volley for the home side from the edge of the area, before Olly Dyson went close for York minutes later with a header which was smartly saved by George Sykes-Kenworthy.

City broke the deadlock in the 20th minute through Wright, who crashed home a bullet header into the bottom-left corner to give the Minstermen a break through in West Yorkshire.

The lead only lasted ten minutes though as the home side found a way back into the game through Johnson. He rose highest at the near post to meet a cross in from the right and guide a header into the top-right corner beyond Jameson.

Duckworth re-gave the Minstermen the lead at the Horsfall eight minutes before half-time, sending a low effort on his weak foot into the bottom-left corner from 12 yards out, after the right back made a brilliant surging run into the penalty area.

It got even better for Askey’s side as Hancox made it 3-1 three minutes later. The Hereford loanee rifled home a fierce effort across the face of goal into the bottom-right corner beyond Sykes-Kenworthy, giving the Minstermen a comfortable lead heading into half-time.

It was the home side who started the second half brighter and they pulled a goal back eight minutes into the second half to make it 3-2. A low ball was played into the area and Hopper was on hand to poke the ball past Jameson at his near post to give Bradford a lifeline.

Willoughby fired a free-kick from long-range into the hands of the Bradford keeper, before Hancox met a cross into the area from Scott Barrow and narrowly guided a header over the bar from close-range.

Brad Dockerty thought he had found a late equaliser for Bradford with less than ten minutes to go, but he fired wide of goal from point-blank range, after City failed to deal with a ball into the area.

Hancox made sure of the three points for City in the 90th minute, meeting a low cross in from Olly Dyson from the right, before finishing low beyond Sykes-Kenworthy into the bottom-right corner with a left-footed finish.

York secure an all-important victory and all three points, which sees us move up a place in the National League North table to 11th place.

Askey’s side will now turn their attentions to this coming Saturday’s Buildbase FA Trophy 5th Round tie against Northern Premier League side Morpeth Town at the LNER Community Stadium (3pm kick-off).
