Hamza Bencherif scored his first competitive goals for City in a convincing 4-0 victory over Darlington this afternoon at Bootham Crescent.

The French-born defender had waited 83 games to end his City goal drought but grabbed two in 42 minutes as City took sweet revenge for their 5-1 Boxing Day defeat against the Quakers at Blackwell Meadows.

Strikers Jordan Burrow and Jake Wright were also on target as City opened 2019 in style and moved up to 13th in Vanarama National League North..

Midfielder Simon Heslop and centreback Joe Davis replaced Nathan Dyer and Kennedy Digie as manager Sam Collins made two changes to his side following the 2-1 defeat at Blyth Spartans.

Referee Nathanael Cox waved away three penalty appeals in the opening 15 minutes - Bencherif and Heslop tangled with Joe Wheatley and Harvey Saunders and, at the opposite end of the field, Darlington midfielder Will Smith appeared to handle in the air when jumping with Burrow.

Cox finally awarded a penalty in the 31st minute when City striker Wright was tripped by goalkeeper Jonny Maddison.

Burrow dispatched the spotkick with the minimum fuss and took his tally of goals to 13 in 21 games, including five from the penalty spot.

Bencherif doubled City's advantage four minutes before halftime, drilling the ball past Maddison at a corner after his initial header had been blocked on the line.

Striker Wright added the third just past the hour mark with a smart left foot finish after shaking off the attention of his marker. It was his third goal in three consecutive games.

Bencherif - who had only previously scored for City in a friendly against Bradford City - scored his second goal of the game, seven minutes from time, rising at the far post to head home a Josh Law corner.

The game attracted City's biggest attendance so far this season - 3265 - and the only downside of the afternoon was the back injury which curtailed Heslop's comeback early in the second half.
