GOALS from Simon Heslop and Amari Morgan-Smith secured a 2-0 win for York City on an emotional afternoon against Stockport County.

Heslop’s goal after 17 minutes sparked jubilant scenes among the City players who celebrated with manager Gary Mills in front of the dug-out.

However, there was even more emotion in the ground after 29 minutes when Morgan-Smith doubled City’s advantage.

Amid a delay in the re-start due to an injury to a Stockport player, City supporters rose as one to salute the memory of former striker David Longhurst who tragically died 27 years ago this week.

There was a spontaneous outbreak of applause around Bootham Crescent as City supporters chanted Longhurst’s name. The City players were also wearing black armbands.

The victory, coming just a few days after a 4-2 win at Spennymoor Town, has lifted City up to fifth in the National League North table.

Heslop had returned to the side after suspension with City going back to a 4-3-3 system and Jassem Sukar dropping to the bench.

Morgan-Smith had been unlucky not to score after 12 minutes but his shot went inches wide after good build-up play by Theo Wharton and Sean Newton.

Another good ball into box by Newton just minutes later had been heading towards Parkin – who was seeking his 200th career goal - but a crucial intervention at full stretch by defender Michael Clarke saved County.

City took the lead on 17 minutes when Heslop hit a low shot past goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe following a throw into the box from Newton.

City’s confidence grew and it was no surprise when Morgan-Smith doubled the lead 12 minutes later.

Collecting a pass 35 yards out, the striker cut inside a defender before curling an unstoppable shot into the top corner of Stockport’s net.

If the goal been scored in the Premier League, it would probably have been given top billing on tonight's ‘Match of the Day.’

Stockport defender Clarke was stretchered off after suffering a serious injury in the build-up to Morgan-Smith’s goal.

The visitors struggled to get back into the contest although there was a close call for City in the 35th minute when Sam Walker shot against the post.

As City defender Hamza Bencherif looked to deal with the rebound, he inadvertently turned the ball over his own line but referee David Underwood spotted a foul by a Stockport player so the ‘goal’ was disallowed.

City weathered a spell of second half pressure from Stockport as conditions deteriorated following a heavy downpour.

However, by the final whistle, the sun was shining over Bootham Crescent again and the players left the field with cheers ringing in their ears.
