YORK City suffered a derby defeat at Harrogate Town this afternoon in Vanarama National League North.

Striker Joe Leesley gave Town the lead from the penalty spot after 16 minutes and midfielder Liam Agnew made it 2-0 seven minutes into the second half.

City went into the game without strikers Jon Parkin and Michael Rankine and also lost defender Josh Law at the interval with a groin injury.

Manager Gary Mills was not prepared to gamble with veteran Parkin on Town’s artificial pitch and Rankine is still awaiting the results of tests after missing last weekend’s FA Cup game with high blood pressure.

Town took the lead from the penalty spot just moments after City fullback Alex Whittle had forced a brilliant low save from goalkeeper James Belshaw at the opposite end.

City goalkeeper Jon Worsnop pulled down advancing Town striker Jordan Thewlis and was awarded a yellow card. Leesley duly converted the spot-kick with the minimum of fuss.

City nearly equalised in the 27th minute when good play by Simon Heslop and Law created an opportunity for Whittle to shoot over from the edge of the box.

Louis Almond volleyed over after Amari Morgan-Smith flicked on a cross and City pushed hard for an equaliser but Town held on to the lead until the interval.

Law was replaced by Jassem Sukar at halftime and fit-again Adriano Moke came on for Kaine Felix. City switched to a 3-5-2 formation with Heslop and Whittle as wingbacks.

Town doubled their lead after 52 minutes when a shot from midfielder Agnew took a wicked deflection off Sukar and wrong-footed the helpless Worsnop.

Thewlis and Leesley had both gone  close for Town before City captain Sean Newton struck the post with a shot at a corner entering the final 20 minutes of the game.

City remain seventh in the table but are 11 points behind Town who top the table.
