York City made it back-to-back wins as they defeated Farsley Celtic 4-2 at the LNER Community Stadium.

Goals in the first half from Kurt Willoughby and Mark Beck set City on their way at the break, before Michael Woods and Clayton Donaldson sealed three points for the Minstermen in the second half, despite two late goals for the visitors.

The Minstermen secured their first victory of the season in Bank Holiday Monday’s win at Spennymoor Town, kick starting their season as they bounced back from three previous straight defeats in the league.

Ahead of kick off, Steve Watson announced the same starting eleven that featured against Spennymoor, as Josh King returned to the bench after an isolation period.

The visitors went into the game off the back of an unbeaten start in the league, sitting in 8th place. A win on the opening day at Hereford, followed by draws against Chester, Kettering and Blyth gave Adam Lakeland’s side confidence heading into the game.

City went close to opening the scoring after only 3 minutes, Olly Dyson sent in a dangerous low cross from the right, but Donaldson fired wide of Tom Donaghy’s left-hand post.

Ben McKenna then forced Peter Jameson into an easy save after 13 minutes, before Paddy McLaughlin was required to be in the right place at the right time to clear away a Farsley effort on his own goal line.

Jameson denied James Hanson with his legs from close range on 18 minutes, before Donaldson tested Donaghy into his first save of the save, forcing the Farsley ‘keeper to tip away an effort from the City forward, after a brilliant break and pull back from Olly Dyson.

City opened the scoring after 24 minutes through Willoughby. He collected the ball on the left wing before cutting inside and curled an effort into the into the bottom right corner beyond the Farsley goalkeeper.

York looked to double their lead and were presented with a brilliant chance to do so, but Akil Wright fired over the bar from just inside the penalty area on the half hour mark.

Farsley tested Jameson into another save from distance after 40 minutes, before Jaden Charles tested Donaghy into a low save with an effort from long-range on the stroke of half time.

City doubled their lead a minute later as a Michael Woods header forward led to a comedy of errors at the back for Farsley, before a last ditch attempt from Mark Beck cleared Donaghy’s head before landing in the bottom right corner doubling the Minstermen’s lead heading into the break.

Into the second half, Woods extended the Minstermen’s lead after 58 minutes, as he made it 3-0 to the hosts. He tapped home from six yards out, after Farsley failed to clear away a cross from Donaldson.

It got worse for the away side as Donaldson made it 4-0 after 70 mins from the penalty spot, after a handball in the area from a cross from Charles on the left. The striker stepped up to send Donaghy the wrong way, placing the ball in the bottom-right corner, giving York a comfortable lead over their Yorkshire rivals.

Former Minsterman Will Hayhurst pulled a goal back for the away side two minutes with a stunning effort, as he beat Jameson from distance, placing the ball into the top corner from 25 yards out.

And Farsley scored again in the 82nd minute through former Bradford City striker James Hanson, as he headed home a rebound, after Jameson did well to deny an original header from Jimmy Spencer.

Substitutes Mackenzie Heaney and Jason Gilchrist both had efforts to make it five for the home side, but neither could capitalise on chances, as Donaghy saved well from both of them in the late stages of the second half.

City saw out the victory, climbing up the league table as they made it two wins on the bounce.

They head into the next fixture with Hereford looking to make it three wins on the bounce, as they welcome them to the LNER Community Stadium next Saturday (3pm kick-off).
