City thrashed Spennymoor Town this afternoon thanks to a number of spectacular finishes at The Brewery Field which led to a 4-1 victory.

It was Spennymoor’s first game on home turf since May, and City had the pleasure of gracing the new surface on a sunny afternoon in County Durham backed by the vast support of York fans.

They say you should never change a winning team, and Steve Watson has seemingly bought into this idea, naming an unchanged side for the third successive game in the National League North to face the Moors.

City registered the first few shots of the game, but it was Spennymoor who had the first good opportunity, with McKenna beating the offside trap and running in on goal before Jameson came out of his goal and headed away the danger.

Spennymoor had already had a yellow card for a bad challenge earlier in the game, but on 19 minutes another mistimed tackle allowed Sean Newton to step up and curl an inch-perfect free kick up and over the wall and into the back of the net with Matt Gould planted between the sticks.

City burst into life after the goal and looked full of confidence with a Kieran Green volley cleared off the line and a David Ferguson cross just missing the incoming Jordan Burrow and Kallum Griffiths in the following moments.

Eventually it was an own goal gave City their second of the game; goalkeeper Matt Gould making a mess of his punch out and allowing Joe Tait to fizz one across the area – only for a Spennymoor player to turn into his own net.

Griffiths looked eager to get in on the action against his old team and went close on 29 minutes with two quickfire shots – the latter struck over the crossbar. However, his strike on 43 minutes hit the target in spectacular fashion, the wing back cutting in from the right and finding the bottom corner with his left foot from 25 yards.

Spennymoor grabbed a goal back just before the break, Ben McKenna leaving Jameson no chance after latching onto a cross from the left-hand side.

Spennymoor could have easily had another just after half time when a corner was cleared into the path of Shane Henry who hit inches over the bar from the edge of the box.

The Moors came close again on 62 minutes, Ben McKenna hitting first time inside the box from a fizzed ball across but missing the target.

City endured an attacking onslaught by Spennymoor in the second half, but Adriano Moke put a stop to any hope of a comeback with a curling effort from outside the box which settled in the top right corner of the goal – City’s fourth and arguably the best goal of the game.

City saw the game out and finished the contest comfortable winners in which ended in their fourth straight League victory – still top of the table and unbeaten in their first six.
