City continued their climb up the National League North table with a 3-1 win over Southport in front of a record crowd at the LNER Community Stadium.

A first half goal from Matty Brown and second half finishes from Akil Wright and Olly Dyson sealed all three points and brought City within one point of the playoffs.

Steve Watson made just one change to his side which faced Whitby last week, with Kurt Willoughby being handed his opportunity to start up front with Clayton Donaldson. Akil Wright retained his place at centre half and fitted within a 4-4-2.

Veteran striker Donaldson set the tone early in the game with a glanced header from a corner turned just wide in the first minute.

Minutes later, Willoughby was released down the right wing and stung the hands of England ‘C’ goalkeeper Cameron Mason from an acute angle.

The eventual breakthrough came from most unlikely of sources, captain Matty Brown heading home his first York City goal just before the half hour mark after latching onto an Olly Dyson cross from the edge of the box.

But the Sandgrounders managed to level the score just two minutes later, going the other end and winning a contentious penalty after a yellow shirt was deemed to be pulled down in the area. Midfielder Josh Hmami stepped up and sent Pete Jameson the wrong way from the spot to equalise.

Heroics from Jameson just before half time denied Jack Doyle’s point-blank header at the back to post with the former Blyth man saving with his fingertips.

Akil Wright had looked dangerous from corners all afternoon and finally managed to convert one of his headers in the second half, leaping above the yellow shirts to nod down past Mason and give City a well-deserved lead on 58 minutes.

Michael Carver went close for Southport later on, with a one-two allowing him to curl one just wide of Jameson’s post.

Olly Dyson continued his rich vein of form and looked untouchable on the right wing as he danced through the Southport defence from his own half on the counter-attack and nearly finished off a great move but his cross was just ahead of Mackenzie Heaney who was streaming in at the back post.

Dyson capped off his man of the match performance with his first goal of the season after receiving a squared ball by Donaldson after the Jamaican wrestled the ball to the byline – Dyson made no mistake with his finish which was the final nail in the coffin on 85 minutes.

18-year-old Jonny Haase came on to make his first team debut in injury time and helped the Minstermen see out the game in the final minutes.

City now turn their attentions back to the Emirates FA Cup where a win against Morpeth Town next week will secure their place in the first round proper. Kick-off is 3:00pm next Saturday at the LNER Community Stadium.
