City kept the pressure on at the top of the table with a 2-0 victory to go with a professional performance on the road against Southport.

A first half own goal followed by a smart finish by Jordan Burrow just after half time made the difference as City cruised to their second successive win in the National League North.

Steve McNulty came into the side that beat Bradford the week before, with Macaulay Langstaff dropping to the bench and the formation reverting to the usual three at the back with two wingbacks.

Alex Kempster started up top with Jordan Burrow and the Geordie forward had the first chance at goal three minutes in, heading a lofted ball over his defender and forcing Charles Albinson to push for a corner at his near post.

On 8 minutes Jack Sampson had an effort from outside the box which provoked a diving save by Pete Jameson and a clearance from David Ferguson.

Southport then went close after a free kick into the box was headed out as far as Devarn Green who volleyed inches wide of the right-hand post from inside the area.

Kieran Green then cleared a goalbound effort before going up the other end a few minutes later and powering a deflected shot outside the area just wide.

The resulting corner provided the first goal of the game, an in-swinger by Kallum Griffiths coming off the head of a Southport player at the near post and into the far corner.

The goal was originally given to Jordan Burrow after being announced over the PA system, however was confirmed as an own goal at the end of the game.

City went to double the lead straight after with Adriano Moke bringing the ball forward on a counter attack and playing a through ball to Alex Kempster who beat his man for pace and won a corner as the goalkeeper got a hand on his shot on goal.

It took just four minutes into the second half for City to grab another goal – this time the PA announcer making no mistake after the forward was played in on the left of the goal by Green and neatly side-footed into the bottom corner to give York a two-goal cushion.

Paddy McLaughlin was lively in the second half and brought the ball to the byline on the left before firing just too high for the incoming red shirts.

Kieran Green then fancied getting on the scoresheet himself after providing the second goal, the number 10 firing wide from the left just outside the box.

Green then had another effort deflected wide on 70 minutes after he struck first-time from the loose ball after Kempster was tackled last-ditch in the area.

Southport then had a good chance after a free kick to the back post was headed across goal and then helped on goalward which was heroically blocked by City and then cleared.

Kallum Griffiths then went close after picking up the ball just outside the area and firing one goal bound which was palmed out by Albinson.

Macaulay Langstaff was introduced later in the game and was denied a second goal in two games as the Southport goalkeeper closed down his angle and blocked the shot after the forward was put through on the right of the box.

City controlled the game well in the dying moments and managed a clean sheet along with three points to put the Club on a total tally of 50 points for the season after 25 games.
