Alex Kempster and Kyle McFarlane fired the Minstermen into the third round qualifying with a 2-0 win at Irlam in the Emirates FA Cup.

Manager Steve Watson named a strong side to face their North West Counties League opponents this afternoon live on BBC Sport with the addition of Tom Allan filling it at centre half after his loan spell and Wes York making his first start of the season up top.

After a slight turbulent first few moments, Alex Kempster opened to scoring for City on 33 minutes, the forward latching onto a trademark David Ferguson cross and helping the ball into the back of the net from close range.

City also went close just before half time, Andy Bond hitting a back post cross first time straight into the possession of Irlam goalkeeper Lee White – the ball sticking to his hands like glue.

Irlam went close straight after half time, Jordan Buckley running in on the left and firing across Whitley’s goal, just inches wide of the far post.

New signing Kyle McFarlane was introduced for the first time on 60 minutes and almost made immediate impact, sliding in for a 50/50 with the goalkeeper whilst running in on goal only to stopped for a dubious foul.

But the former Birmingham City striker didn’t stop there as he grabbed his debut goal on 77 minutes – another Ferguson cross which was side-footed past the Irlam ‘keeper at the near post to give City a two-goal cushion.

City were dominant in the latter stages of the game and Steve Watson opted to introduce 17-year-old Charlie Jebson-King in the last 5 minutes, who put in an array of promising balls into the box and showed glimpses of his talents from the left side of defence.

The whistle blew after three minutes of injury time and City managed a routine win in Greater Manchester, progressing to the next round of the competition.
