York City beat National League side Notts County 3-1 this afternoon thanks to goals from Dan Maguire, Macaulay Langstaff and Alex Kempster.

Victory at Bootham Crescent was the Minstermen’s fifth successive scalp in pre-season with the regular season fast approaching.

The first chance of the game came on 8 minutes when Jordan Burrow brought down a lobbed pass and curled one just over the bar.

And the early chance was a sign of things to come as City pushed for an opening goal; notably Kallum Griffiths forcing County goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons to tip over the bar from a goal bound cross.

Minutes later Dan Maguire opened the scoring with a real poacher’s effort; latching onto David Ferguson’s low shot and putting the ball away with his left foot inside the area to give City the lead.

County tried their luck from distance on 31 minutes with Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain hoping to beat Peter Jameson, but the former Potsmouth player couldn’t keep his shot down as it soared above the David Longhurst stand.

Maguire looked to add to his tally before the break as the frontman tried one from 25-yards with his back to goal, the ball deflecting narrowly wide of the top corner.

Steve Watson made four changes for the second half, a Trialist and Whitley coming on as well as changes to the front line with Kempster and Langstaff on for Burrow and Maguire.

And the fresh faces up front wreaked havoc on the County defence, especially with Langstaff making runs down the right wing, only to be eventually tackled by a striped shirt.

It was Andy Bond who nearly got the second City goal, going past his man on the edge before his thunderbolt strike was blocked away by a County defender.

And at the other end of the field Griffiths was doing his job well in defence, making a last-ditch tackle to deny a County attack down the wing.

Alex Kempster made a vital tackle in the final third on 68 minutes which allowed for a through ball to fellow substitute Macaulay Langstaff, who set himself in the box, and then smashed into the corner of the net to give City a 2-0 lead.

Notts County were seemingly thrown a lifeline later on with Pearce Bird bundling the ball in past Ryan Whitley after a dinked ball to the back post.

The 2-1 score line didn’t last for long however - as City hit back almost immediately - Alex Kempster rising up and getting his head to a corner and putting City in the driving seat with 7 minutes on the clock.

Nathan Dyer made an appearance in the latter stages and nearly blasted one in before the full time whistle, the teenager driving the ball and skimming the post as his shot went agonisingly wide.

The whistle blew at Bootham Crescent with another splendid performance in pre-season for the Minstermen with just a single game to go until the start of the 2019-20 Vanarama National League North campaign.
