A GOAL by Chester striker George Waring denied City the victory that could have extended their involvement in the play-off chase.

Waring equalised in the 73rd minute after Paddy McLaughlin had put City 2-1 ahead at the Swansway Chester Stadium.

The draw leaves City eleven points adrift of the top seven in Vanarama National League North with only three more games to play.

Midfielder Adriano Moke returned from suspension and replaced Jake Wright in the only change to the City side from last week's victory against Southport.

Teenagers Ryan Whitley and Jasper Moon both kept their places in the side after making debuts seven days earlier but goalkeeper Adam Bartlett, back from illness, had to settle for a place on the bench.

City made the better start and Macaulay Langstaff was unlucky not to score in the 12th minute after running onto a pass from McLaughlin and forcing a one-handed save from Grant Shenton.

Although Sean Newton and Kallum Griffiths both blocked Chester shots on the edge of the area, City were firmly on top in the first 45 minutes.

They deservedly went into the interval leading thanks to an 18-yard shot from Moke which curled beyond the reach of goalkeeper Shenton.

Newton, meanwhile, had a header palmed over the crossbar by Shenton who also raced to the edge of his area to make a vital clearance as Scott Burgess threatened to double the lead just before the break.

Chester got back on level terms immediately after the interval when Newton headed into his own net.

Goalkeeper Whitley had come off his line to try and collect a freekick delivered high into the area by Matty Waters but misjudged the flight of the ball catching Newton by surprise.

City regained the lead in the 64th minute when McLaughlin arrived to met a cross from Langstaff at the far post.

The lead lasted just nine minutes, however, as Chester equalised for a second time through striker Waring at a corner.

City might have snatched victory right at the death but a cross from Langstaff was just too high for captain Jordan Burrow.
