The Minstermen regained their spot at the top of the table with a comfortable 3-0 win away at Blyth Spartans this evening.

Dan Maguire was not included in the squad due to a minor injury, but former Spartans: Pete Jameson, Kieran Green and Macaulay Langstaff all featured in the contest at Croft Park.

City kicked off in the North East backed by a healthy away support in the ‘Plessy Road’ end of the ground and were considered firm favourites ahead of an unbeaten start to the season in the Vanarama National League North.

It was Blyth who had the first good opportunity of the game; a cross by Rhys Evans which found itself goal bound, but Jameson was there to tip wide at full stretch.

However, City pushed on with two quickfire attempts by Sean Newton; first a header easily saved by Nathan Harker, then a driven shot through the wet surface held by the ‘keeper.

The downpour stopped after 15 minutes, but City were adamant to rain on Blyth’s parade, and did so on 18 minutes – Kempster with a back post cross and Kallum Griffiths acrobatically scoring into the bottom corner to open the scoring.

It took City just six minutes to produce a second goal; Alex Kempster entering the box on the right and curling past Nathan Harker from an angle with his left-foot.

Kempster grew into the game after his goal and was beaming with confidence on the ball later in the first half; seeming untouchable at times with the ball at his feet.

Kieran Green nearly got in on the action just before the half time whistle, a corner into the box chested down by the midfielder and hit towards goal from point range – just the fingertips of Nathan Harker denying City a third goal in a very positive half.

Blyth tried to improve their attacking options in the second half by bringing on striker Michael Sweet for a defender, but City remained in control of the fixture with Joe Tait going close minutes into the half, misplacing his header just wide following a corner.

Kieran Green marked his return to Croft Park with the third goal of the game for City; an early cross by Sean Newton headed in at the near post by the former Spartan on 52 minutes.

City looked comfortable in the second half and Steve Watson took the opportunity to introduce Nathan Dyer for the first time this season, as well as Macaulay Langstaff who replaced goal scorer Alex Kempster.

Blyth hadn’t posed a real attacking threat all game, but Pete Jameson was called into action on the 74th minute with Adam Wrightson hitting the ball on the half-volley only for the City ‘keeper to produce a fingertip save over the crossbar.

City had a chance with a free kick late on in the game, but the hopeful effort was struck straight into the wall.

After three minutes the whistle blew for full time; a great performance on the road and confident victory for the Minstermen.
