The Minstermen made it four wins in a row as they ousted South Shields 2-0 in their first pre-season friendly away from home with two penalties from Jordan Burrow.

City narrowly lost out to Shields in the FA Cup third qualifying round last time they visited Mariners Park in 2017, but with a new-look squad they managed to grab a convincing win this time around.

The game kicked off on Tyneside with David Foley looking lively down the left wing for Shields, nearly opening the scoring on 7 minutes as he curled wide on his right foot – just skimming past Jameson’s post.

City struggled to get a look-in as Shields pushed on; notably going close with a Nathan Lowe free kick on 14 minutes flying inches over the crossbar.

The game was somewhat turned on its head when City were awarded a penalty on 21 minutes – Dan Maguire going down on the right hand side of the box and providing a great opportunity to spin the game in York’s favour.

Jordan Burrow confidently stepped up and sent Liam Connell the wrong way giving City the vital first goal in the contest.

It was a warm evening on South Tyneside with temperatures reaching 23 degrees; and with the humid conditions a drinks break was ordered which allowed for a break in play after the goal.

Shields were poised for an equaliser after the lull, David Foley having a glorious chance to level the score as a deflected ball put the winger straight through on goal, he beat Jameson, but couldn’t beat the post as City then dealt with the loose ball and cleared any danger.

City ended the first half with a slight chance through Alex Kempster; the forward firing across the box and narrowly missing the boot of an oncoming Jordan Burrow.

Shields made three changes at the break; including the introduction of star signing Jason Gilchrist who had previously scored double figures for Southport last season.

But despite the firepower up front it was City who looked the better side in front of goal, Burrow heading agonisingly wide on 47 minutes and Connell saving a goal bound header moments later.

York were scratching their heads after Ferguson also went close on 51 minutes, driving towards the bottom corner, only for the goalkeeper to tip the ball wide.

But City finally broke through on 54 minutes after they were awarded nothera penalty; again Maguire taken down in the box and Jordan Burrow routinely firing into the back of the net from 10 yards.

Even with the score at 2-0 City didn’t lie down, Maguire raced through on goal and unselfishly squared the ball to Burrow who was denied a hat trick by Connell – the goalkeeper saving from close range.

Chances were few and far between in the latter stages of the game, with South Shields excelling in the final few minutes but failing to score with numerous chances through Millentic Alli down the right wing.

The whistle blew after 90 minutes, another victory for the Minstermen in their preparations for the new National League North season.
