Bradford cut City’s Christmas celebrations short this afternoon as the West Yorkshire side beat the Minstermen 4-2 at the Horsfall Stadium.

It was one of three local games over the Christmas and New Year period, and City looked forward to the test on the 3G surface with Steve Watson making three changes to the team that lost in the FA Trophy.

But Bradford started the strongest, with Lewis Knight opening the scoring after just 4 minutes. The forward was played in over the top on the right of the box before neatly tucking the ball into the bottom corner from an acute angle.

City had a few chances after, notably Scott Barrow cutting inside and winning a corner with a right footed strike, and Redshaw getting in over the top only to be stopped by Dan Atikinson who narrowed the angle.

Avenue made it two on 20 minutes, with former Notts County player Regan Booty getting the ball in the middle, before dribbling through red shirts on the edge are curling into the bottom corner. The home side didn’t have the majority of the possession but made their chances count.

After the second, Robbie Tinkler went close to grabbing one back with a strike from the edge prompting a diving save to keep the ball out.

Jack Redshaw then headed one inches wide of the post after a free kick in from the left by Michael Duckworth.

Michael Woods could have narrowed the gap just before half time, but couldn’t keep his volley under the bar as a cross was punched out to the midfielder in the box.

After a close call in the dying moments of the first half, involving a last-ditch tackle by Matty Brown to stop Lewis Knight after he rounded Pete Jameson, the whistle blew for half time with City two goals down.

City seemed more energetic and looked to be back in the game just after half time when Jack Redshaw hammered home into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. However, Bradford went up the other end and Knight grabbed his second of the game after tapping in a rebound off the post, sending City back to square one.

Rob Guilfoyle came on with 30 minutes to go and added some attacking flair to the front line. The 18-year-old made it 3-2 ten minutes later with a superb play, picking up the ball on the edge, turning a defender and firing into the bottom corner.

Guilfoyle also had a chance with a seemingly free header, but Scott Barrow’s cross was just too high for the forward who was point-blank range.

But all hopes of an equaliser were crushed when Harry Boyes picked up the ball from 30 yards and arrowed into the top corner, leaving Pete Jameson no chance and putting the game to bed.

Bradford saw the game out and now move within 2 points of a playoff place with a game in hand.

City on the other hand now look towards Monday’s home game against Guiseley followed by the Bradford return fixture on the 2nd January. The team currently sit in 5th with four games in hand.
