A 3-1 defeat at the hands of Boston United saw City miss out on top spot in the National League North table.

Kurt Willoughby’s early lob over Boston ‘keeper Peter Crook gave the Minstermen an early first half lead.

Boston were level not long before the break when Frank Mulhern’s deflected lob left Peter Jamieson stranded.

The hosts took the lead soon after the restart when Brad Abbott converted his close-range finish despite appearing to be offside.

And Andi Thanoj’s effort from a short corner late in the game sealed all three points for a Boston side who now go seven games unbeaten.

York were threatening early on and in the 3rd minute, an early ball over the top for Burrow to chase needed to be cleared to safety.

And in the seventh minute, they had the early breakthrough after a well-executed ball from Moke found Willoughby who, from the edge of the area, expertly lobbed the keeper.

Only one minute later, Boston could well have levelled the score when a ball across the penalty area from Alex Penny was missed at the back post by Dominic Knowles.

Going one goal behind spurred the hosts on, with Andi Thanoj’s effort from distance ballooning over the crossbar.

And in the 20th minute, York almost doubled the lead when a deep goal kick from Jameson almost found Kallum Griffiths at the far post, with the ball bobbling just out of his reach.

Whilst Boston were threatening going forwards, they were struggling in front of goal, with Penny’s long-range effort in the 29th minute arching over the Jakemans Stand.

As the Pilgrims pressed for an equaliser, the visitors almost caught them napping in the 34th minute. After breaking on the Boston goal, Willoughby’s low cross was cut out before Moke would double the lead.

Tempers flared only moments later when Luke Shiels scythed down Burrow in the centre of the pitch. Despite cries for a red card from the away end, the Boston captain got away with only a caution.

Luck seemed to be going against York and in the 38th minute, Boston capitalised when Frank Mulhern’s deflected shot looped over Jamieson to send both sides into the break level.

A fast-paced start to the second half almost saw the Pilgrims take the lead in the 51st minute when after a goalmouth scramble, the ball was deflected narrowly wide.

However, from the resulting corner, Boston had their lead when after a thunderous drive crashed against the crossbar, Abbott snuck in at the far post to convert the loose ball, despite looking a yard offside.

Steve Watson then made a double substitution and one of them almost had the Minstermen level. After picking up the ball on the edge of the area in the 58th minute, Dan Maguire fired his shot millimetres wide.

But Boston were still threatening the York goal, with Thanoj’s effort from the edge of the penalty area wide of Jamieson’s goal.

York had a glorious chance to tie the game up when Andy Bond charged forward before unleashing a thunderous strike, in the 75th minute, which crashed against the crossbar.

But Boston took a firm control of the game in the 78th minute when after a quick corner, Thanoj’s swirling cross caught Jameson out as the ball nestled into the top corner of the far post.

The Minstermen were struggling to create chances as time was running out, with Bond’s long-range strike over the bar the last chance before the referee brought the game to an end.
