The Minstermen overcame Hartlepool United this evening 2-1 at Bootham Crescent thanks to goals from Dan Maguire and Alex Kempster.

Over the weekend Steve Watson had described the game as a good barometer of his side’s potential for the new season, and the City manager will be no doubt pleased with a positive result over a higher division club.

It was Hartlepool who had the first chance over on the left wing minutes into the game; Romoney Crichlow-Noble finding the ball on the edge and firing just over the bar.

Dan Maguire hadn’t featured in the previous fixture against Bolton Wanderers but looked refreshed and lively against Pools; notably cutting inside on his left foot and curling one goal bound – only for it to be blocked by a blue shirt.

And the energetic frontman nearly provided the first goal on 15 minutes when he was played in down the left and squared across the box; his ball just beyond strike partner Jordan Burrow who would have had an open goal.

Moments later Hartlepool hit back with a chance of their own the other end; a corner fizzed to the edge of the box which was subsequently blasted over by Kabamba.

On 28 minutes the visitors squandered a great chance to go ahead - a misplaced back pass allowing the Pools winger to drag back for Josh Hawkes in the box – his effort put agonisingly wide of the post from close range.

Nicky Kabamba made up for his teammates mistake just five minutes after, latching onto a back post cross and looping his header over Jameson and into the back of the net to give his team the lead.

Pools pushed for another just before half time with Luke James causing havoc in the box, twisting and turning before his shot was cancelled out by a City defender.

In true pre-season fashion Pools named nine outfield changes in their second half team – City on the other hand opting for an unchanged side going into the final 45 minutes.

It was on 54 minutes that City grabbed the equaliser; a ball across the box finding Dan Maguire at the back post who made no mistake to help the ball into the back of the net and open his scoring account in North Yorkshire.

Their tally was nearly doubled minutes later when Sean Newton forced an acrobatic save out of Ben Killip after a long range free kick which was heading into the top corner.

The momentum was with City after the goal and they took the lead on 68 minutes – Alex Kempster heading home from a Kallum Griffiths corner to net his second in as many games.

An onslaught of corners followed with City looking dominant for large periods of the second half; Hartlepool struggling for any kind of attacking threat in the later stages of the game.

Peter Kioso provided a glimmer of a late equaliser with an effort from the edge of the box which skimmed the top of the City crossbar, but the game finished in York’s favour - a much improved second half performance deserving of a victory.
