City continued their unbeaten start to the season this afternoon with a 1-0 win against Brackley Town at Bootham Crescent.

Steve Watson named just one change from Tuesday night’s draw with Farsley, with Dan Maguire coming back into the line-up after being left out previously with a minor injury.

The first chance came just four minutes into the half, Alex Kempster going close with a shot-cum-cross after receiving the ball on the left of the box.

Jordan Burrow then went close, Adriano Moke playing in the frontman, before spinning in the box and testing Danny Lewis who was forced into a low save.

City had a double chance on 25 minutes, first Andy Bond’s goal bound strike blocked, then Alex Kempster’s header well held by the Brackley goalkeeper.

Burrow nearly challenged again after an Andy Bond dinked through ball from midfield, but the ball was just beyond him as it skidded out for a goal kick.

York seemed constantly on the attack for the remainder of the half, Brackley sitting deep with five at the back and allowing City to dominate the ball.

Macaulay Langstaff replaced Dan Maguire at half time and Wes York and Kieran Green came on ten minutes later, with Watson hoping to add some flair out on the field.

And that bit of magic came seconds after the double substitution with Andy Bond trying a low drive from 30-yards out which managed to find its way in off the post – a vital goal for City on 56 minutes.

City were eager to add to the tally after opening the scoring, first a back-post cross by Joe Tait headed agonisingly wide by Langstaff, then a shot from the edge dragged wide by Sean Newton following a Jordan Burrow lay-off.

Alex Kempster also went close near the 70-minute mark, wriggling through the defence before the ball unfortunately bounced off his shin and went out for a goal kick.

Later on, Brackley Town made two substitutions in quick succession, hoping the fresh faces could influence the game.

The away team had their chances in the later stages, notably Thierry Audel smashing one over on the edge with a first-time strike.

Matt Lowe was also booked on 85 minutes for simulation inside the area, the referee having none of the substitute’s theatricals and making a well determined decision.

City prevailed after three minutes of injury time; Jameson blocking Glenn Walker late on to secure the three points which saw City go top of the league.
