John Askey's men made it six consecutive wins with a comfortable three points against promotion hopefuls AFC Fylde.

Second half goals from Lenell John-Lewis and Mitch Hancox secured the Minstermen's victory, which sees the team edge into a playoff place.

John Askey made one change to his side which dispatched Guiseley last weekend, midfielder AJ Greaves replacing an injured Sam Sanders with Akil Wright dropping into centre half. Teenage defender Jonny Haase took his position on the bench.

Fylde man Nick Haughton was dubbed as the one to watch, with 18 league goals to his name already, but in the early stages he had a trademark free kick palmed away by Pete Jameson – setting the tone for the rest of the game.

City worked their way into the game and had a good chance on 20 minutes when Greaves picked out Scott Barrow on the left wing who then found the head of Lenell John-Lewis – the big striker’s effort glanced just wide after a slight deflection.

Michael Duckworth and Mitch Hancox then combined to allow the midfielder to strike on goal from the left, but his attempt whistled past the far post.

The boys in red and blue really piled on the pressure in the latter stages of the first half, first Barrow curling just over the crossbar after receiving a short corner and then John-Lewis having another header this time denied by Chris Neal between the Fylde sticks.

Ben Tollitt had a chance just before half time for the Coasters, making his way through the middle of the park before blasting one towards the bottom corner, but again Jameson was there to make the all-important save.

City looked comfortable despite the deadlock but added attacking flair in the second half with Kurt Willoughby coming on for Jack McKay on 67 minutes.

And that change seemed to be an inspired move by Askey, as two minutes later the former Fylde man brought the ball to the left wing before cutting back to Barrow whose cross caused havoc for the Coasters defence who failed to clear before John-Lewis swooped in and smashed the opening goal into the bottom corner.

But City weren’t finished there, with Kouogun then going close with a header from a free kick which was eventually cleared from a crowded area by the home side.

Duckworth then drove forward on the right, before laying off to Hancox to strike into the back of the net with a sweet left foot on 76 minutes, adding a blow to Fylde’s chances of a late comeback.

John-Lewis could have doubled his tally on 79 minutes, but Neal got down to make a solid stop from his powerful strike on the right of the box.

And Hancox could have also grabbed another, this time Paddy McLaughlin skinning a defender on the left byline before cutting back to the midfielder who skied his effort over the crossbar.

An incredible roar erupted from the City faithful on the full time whistle, knowing that their Minstermen had edged their way into a playoff place with now three games in hand over top team Gateshead.

Next up for City is a tough test against playoff contenders Hereford at Edgar Street on Saturday – kick-off 3pm.
