York’s hopes of winning the FA Trophy came to an end in the second-round despite drawing the game 3-3 after 90 minutes, the Minstermen fell to a penalty shoot-out defeat against Ashton United at Hurst Cross Stadium.

City opened the scoring after 13 minutes when Olly Dyson let fly from 25-yards out with his effort successfully finding the bottom corner.

Things got even better for Steve Watson’s men five minutes later when a fine move ended with Dyson crossing for Michael Woods who slotted into the net to double the away sides advantage.

However, the Robins pulled a goal back a minute later when Millenic Alli’s shot deflected in off goalkeeper Pete Jameson to give the hosts a route back into the contest.

The visitors then restored their two-goal lead in the 24th minute when striker Jack Redshaw went one-on-one with Greg Hartley and slotted past him with ease.

Dyson came close to making it four, but had his shot saved by Hartley.

This was all the notable action of an entertaining first-half with the Minstermen taking a two-goal lead into the break.

Michael Clegg’s men scored their second 10 minutes into the second period when Harvey Macadam slotted past Jameson.

York very nearly restored their two-goal lead again when Redshaw curled his effort inches wide of the post.

With just under 15 minutes remaining, the Robins found an equaliser when two of the substitutions combined with Louis Almond’s low cross was tapped in by Brad Lynch an unlikely equaliser.

The visitors came so close to winning it in the 89th minute when Dyson played the ball to substitute Rob Guilfoyle who had his shot saved by Hartley who was the hero for the hosts on this occasion.

With nothing to separate the two teams after 90 minutes, the game went to a penalty shoot-out in this FA Trophy second-round tie.

With York missing two out of their four penalties, Lynch the player who scored the equaliser in the match was also the hero in the shoot-out for the Robins as they advanced into round three of the FA Trophy.
