The Minstermen have gone out of the Buildbase FA Trophy today after losing 2-1 to North Yorkshire neighbours Harrogate Town.

On-loan winger Alex Bray had seized on a mistake by Town goalkeeper James Belshaw to give City the lead in the first half but Town, who are third in the National League, fought back in atrocious weather conditions to secure a narrow victory and progress to the second round.

Manager Sam Collins had made five changes to his side following last week's defeat at Boston United with Nathan Dyer, David Ferguson, Josh Law, Wes York, and Bray replacing Joe Tait, Sean Newton, Adriano Moke, Alex Harris, and Macaulay Langstaff.

The shake-up so nearly paid off and, despite the defeat, the performance still offered encouragement for the rest of the season.

Lewis Hawkins should have opened the scoring for City after 19 minutes but turned the ball wide from close range after good work on the right by Jordan Burrow and York.

City took the lead just moments later thanks to hesitancy on the edge of the area from Town goalkeeper Belshaw which allowed Bray to intercept a loose ball and roll the ball into an unguarded net.

It was City's first competitive goal against Town following 2-0 defeats in both Vanarama National League North fixtures last season.

The lead only lasted seven minutes as Dominic Knowles equalised for Town when curling a low shot past Adam Bartlett from 18 yards.

Although a floodlight went on the blink near the Town penalty box towards the end of the second half, City were unable to take advantage of the faded light.

Indeed, Town might have gone ahead just before the interval but Dyer blocked a close-range shot from Joe Leesley after Knowles pulled the ball back across the area.

York's low cross was diverted inches wide of his own goal by Kelvin Langmead as City looked for a second goal.

But City suffered a setback when midfielder Hawkins was forced out of the action through injury.

Following a spell of mounting pressure, City conceded the decisive goal at a corner in the 66th minute.

Goalkeeper Bartlett appealed in vain for a foul after appearing to be impeded when attempting to punch clear in a crowded area. The ball fell at the feet of Liam Kitching who smashed a shot into the roof of the net from close range.

City substitute Macaulay Langstaff nearly equalised with his first touch of the ball but goalkeeper Belshaw got down well to block his shot.

However, Town were also denied a third goal when York blocked an overhead kick from Warren Burrell on the goalline at a 76th minute corner.
