Sam Collins' reign as caretaker-manager got off to a promising start with a goalless draw against last season's beaten play-off finalists Brackley Town.

Youth team manager Collins, who has stepped into the breach following the departure of Martin Gray, made three changes and switched to a 4-3-3 formation.

He handed a surprise debut to teenager winger Fergus McAughtrie - who has joined the club after impressing on trial - and gave first starts of the season to leftback David Ferguson and midfielder Josh Law.

There was also a change in captaincy with Joe Tait given the armband ahead of Russ Penn in the absence of the injured Sean Newton.

With Penn sitting just behind Simon Heslop and Law in the centre of the park, City played a patient possession game and looked to play the ball out from the back.

They enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the first half and created a number of good opportunities.

Striker Jon Parkin was unlucky not to score in the 12th minute with a first time shot from 25 yards that was deflected narrowly over the crossbar and a great drive from winger McAughtrie brought a flying save from Brackley goalkeeper Danny Lewis.

Brackley had spells of pressure but City were getting players behind the ball and protected goalkeeper Adam Bartlett.

City's goal looked most vulnerable on the half hour mark when Bartlett appeared to be pushed by Lee Ndlovu but recovered to save a follow-up header from Gareth Dean.

Dean and Glenn Walker then had shots blocked in the goalmouth as Brackley exerted pressure from a corner.

City stuck to the task in a second half where opportunities were few and far between.

Shepherd Murombedzi grazed the City bar with a header and captain Tait made a timely intervention to foil James Armson in the area.

There was a scare for City near the end when a backpass from Kallum Griffiths hit a bobble in the goalmouth and rolled under the boot of goalkeeper Adam Bartlett.

The ball was heading towards the line but was hacked away by defender Hamza Bencherif.
