Aidan Connolly scored his third goal in four games as York City beat league leaders Salford City this afternoon at Bootham Crescent.

Striker Jon Parkin struck the crossbar with a second half penalty but City held firm at the back for a clean sheet and, arguably, the best three points of the season so far.

The victory has lifted City up to fifth in the Vanarama National League North table and closed the gap on Salford to 12 points with 12 games to play.

Manager Martin Gray made two changes to the starting line-up with Parkin and midfielder Alex Pattison replacing Raul Correia and Connor Smith.

Parkin had missed the previous game at Tamworth and Pattison returned to the club this week on loan from Middlesbrough.

Leaders Salford gave an instant debut to striker Nathan Arnold following his arrival on loan from Lincoln City.

City's defence had to show great resolve to keep Salford at bay in the early stages. Arnold went close with a glancing header and Adam Bartlett needed to race off his line to foil Jack Redshaw.

However, City gradually established a foothold in the contest and took the lead in the 27th minute when Connolly chipped in from the far side of the area.

His shot struck the inside of the far post and goalkeeper Max Crocombe was unable to stop the ball rolling over the line.

City defended valiantly and, on the half hour mark, David Ferguson cleared off the line with a diving header before a follow-up shot from Lois Maynard struck another Salford player on the line.

City might have doubled their lead before the interval but referee Paul Brown disallowed efforts from both Parkin and captain Sean Newton for alleged fouls in the build-up.

Brown awarded a penalty to City after 64 minutes when winger Tom Walker nudged Parkin in the back.

The veteran striker got off the floor to take the spot-kick but his effort smashed against the middle of the crossbar and the ball was cleared.

Salford goalkeeper Max Crocombe produced a flying save to deny Connolly moments later when the midfielder unleashed a fierce drive from 12 yards that was heading towards the top corner.

The visitors applied more pressure in the final stages but City's defence shone brightly to keep a clean sheet for only the second time in the last five months.
