SUMMER signing Wes York hit a late winner as City beat Stockport County 1-0 on a memorable night at Bootham Crescent.

Winger York scored in the 77th minute to settle a pulsating contest and send the majority of the 3,218 supporters home happy.

Substitute Jon Parkin might have doubled City's lead in the final minute but his first-time shot struck the inside of the post and rolled across the goal area.

City had been awarded an penalty in the 14th minute - after striker Jake Wright was fouled by defender Ash Palmer - but Jordan Burrow's spotkick was saved by goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe.

Midfielder Simon Heslop had been substituted early on - after suffering a rib injury in a yellow card challenge on Stockport's Scott Duxbury.

The visitors nearly took the lead in the 23rd minute but Paul Turnbull's 25 yard drive struck the City crossbar.

After an action-packed first half that swung both ways, City took the game to Stockport after the interval.

Goalkeeper Hinchliffe blocked a shot from Wright with his legs and Stockport were called upon to defend a string of dangerous crosses.

The game was finally settled with 13 minutes to play as York rolled the ball home from close-range following good work down the left involving Russ Penn and substitute Macaulay Langstaff.

Barring a midweek replay in a Cup competition, a re-arranged fixture in the league, or a play-off tie, this may well have been City's final midweek game under floodlights at Bootham Crescent.

If that was the case, few could deny that it was a great way to sign off.
