City progressed to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup this afternoon courtesy of a 5-0 victory over North West Counties League side Ashton Athletic.

Goals from David Ferguson, Jordan Burrow, Joe Tait, and new signing Alex Harris put City firmly in command at halftime before substitute Wes York added a fifth midway through the second half.

Caretaker-manager Sam Collins made three changes to his side with Harris, Burrow, and defender Sean Newton, replacing Jake Wright, Fergus McAughtrie and the injured Hamza Bencherif.

City took just two minutes to go ahead, scoring with their first attack as Ferguson converted a low cross from Burrow.

Playing in a re-shuffled 3-5-2 formation, City dominated for lengthy periods and doubled their lead in the 15th minute when Burrow tucked the ball home at the far post after goalkeeper Martin Pearson blocked a shot from Simon Heslop.

Athletic threatened only briefly at freekicks in the first half when a header from Luke Holden floated wide of the far post and a header from Marcus Cusani was blocked in the penalty box.

Midfielder Adriano Moke, who was making his 100th appearance for the Minstermen, was unlucky not to score when his shot from edge of the area deflected onto the top of the crossbar.

However, captain Joe Tait made it 3-0 to City seven minutes before the interval - rising to head home a corner from Josh Law.

New signing Harris added a fourth on the stroke of haltime - tapping into an unguarded net after a shot from Burrow beat the goalkeeper but hit the foot of the post.

With his side in firm control of the contest, caretaker-manager Collins made a double substitution at the interval and introduced winger York and midfielder Russ Penn.

Harris struck the post soon after the interval before York increased City's lead by turning home a low cross from Newton in the 63rd minute.
