Lenell John-Lewis scored twice as York crashed to a 4-1 home defeat to Hereford at Bootham Crescent.

York drew 1-1 against Curzon Ashton on Saturday, thanks to Jordan Burrow’s late equaliser. Burrow also scored late on in the 2-2 draw with Hereford in December. Alex Kempster was also on target that day. The away side have only won one game in the league since the reverse fixture, and that was on New Year’s Day. York were unbeaten in their last five home games.

Patrick McLaughlin, Kieran Green and Kempster came into the side, with Sam Jones and Andy Bond dropping to the bench. Steve McNulty wasn’t involved at all, whilst there were places on the bench for latest loan signing Adam Buxton as well as young Ethan Henderson.

Hereford went ahead after just four minutes. A cross from the right was turned onto the woodwork, and the rebound fell to Kelsey Mooney who was able to turn it in at the back post.

After a handball right on the edge of the box, Green tried to place free kick into the corner. The keeper was able to watch it go behind. Shortly after that, Green was involved again, heading over from a cross from the left.

The visitors doubled their lead just 15 minutes in. A free kick was just put into an area, and John-Lewis managed to get his head on it, putting Hereford 2-0 up.

York looked to respond quickly. A great ball from David Ferguson was met by Kempster, who headed it against the crossbar. The ball then ended up at the feet of a couple of City players inside the box, but none of them could bundle it home.

Burrow then had the ball in the back of the net for City, but the linesman had his flag up for offside.

The ball was in the net just a minute later, and this time it did count, as City were rewarded for their constant pressure. Adriano Moke won the ball in midfield and threaded a ball through to Kempster, who finished clinically into the bottom corner to get York right back into the match.

Kempster then almost scored again, heading one goal wards but the keeper was able to tip it over the bar, and behind for a corner. The corner ended up in the keeper’s hands, as City continued to create chances.

Despite all of York’s pressure, Hereford still had their moments. Peter Jameson had to save well with his feet to keep the lead at just one goal.

Hereford tried to slow the rest of the first half down as much as possible, and no more clear-cut chances appeared before the break, meaning York went in 2-1 down and with work to do.

There was an early chance in the second half for Sean Newton. A free kick went all the way through to Newton at the back post, but he scuffed his shot and Hereford’s keeper was able to gather.

From almost an identical position as the free kick just a minute before, Green was able to flick it onto the post, and the keeper managed to scramble back and keep it out, despite the appeals of the York players that the ball had crossed the line.

Up the other end and Hereford got a third. A corner from the left-hand side caused a real scramble inside the area resulting in a blue shirt being able to poke it home from close range.

Jameson produced a great save to keep York in the game, as John-Lewis volleyed one from outside of the box, but Jameson was up to it and tipped it over the bar.

John-Lewis did manage to get his second of the game twenty minutes into the second half. A good strike that seemed to move in the air got the better of Jameson at the near post.

Ferguson again crossed well from the left and somehow, nobody in a red shirt was able to get the touch that would have given York hope.

Buxton came on for his City debut, as York continued trying all they could to at least give them half a chance. Both Burrow and Kempster headed over from corners.

Nothing seemed to be going for York, especially in the second half. A Hereford defender headed against his own post as he tried to put it behind for a corner, and the rebound which could have gone anywhere, went to a blue shirt.

York failed to get back into the game, despite their best efforts. It finished 4-1 to Hereford.
