City beat King's Lynn in vital game

Match Result

City went three points clear at the top of the National League North this afternoon thanks to goals from Andy Bond, David Ferguson and Joe Tait which gave the Minstermen a 3-0 win over King's Lynn Town.
New signing Elliott Durrell was registered in time for the fixture but Steve Watson opted to name a familiar midfield trio of Moke, Bond and McLaughlin.
The Linnets also had two former City players starting in their first eleven, Ryan Jarvis and Michael Gash, the latter having a slight chance early on when he gathered the ball at the back post but couldn’t get a shot on goal.
A few tough challenges went in by King’s Lynn moments after, Aaron Jones gaining a yellow card for tripping David Ferguson and Andy Bond firing one of the free kicks just over the crossbar from distance.
It was clear after his first attempt that Bond had his slights set on an opener and he did just that on 22 minutes; a great passing display from midfield ending in a low cross by Ferguson and a tap-in by Bond.
The team ran to the dugout the celebrate with the management, showcasing how much the first goal meant to them in the top-of-the-table clash.
Joe Tait then went close minutes later with a goal bound header which tested King’s Lynn goalkeeper Alex Street at full stretch on 32 minutes.
Gash had a chance on the edge just before half time, picking up the ball and trying to curl an effort but it was held by the reliable Pete Jameson between the sticks.
City started the second half with a lot of the possession but struggled to create in the early stages. King’s Lynn nearly capitalised on this on 56 minutes, an inviting cross in from the left nearly putting the ball on a plate for their striker – but a vital block from a red shirt halted any danger.
It was David Ferguson who grabbed the second goal of the game, helping a ball in from the left into the back of the net to give City a good cushion. And he nearly bagged another minutes later, glancing a header inches wide after being found in the box.
City looked dominant in the later stages of the game, and Joe Tait managed to pile on the misery for the Linnets when he headed into the back of the net from a corner to give York a 3-0 lead.
To the visitors’ delight, the game ended after three minutes of additional time – a tremendous roar from the Bootham Crescent faithful confirming City’s vital win over third-placed King’s Lynn.
