City cruised to victory this afternoon with a 2-0 win over Bradford Park Avenue – goals from Kieran Green and Jordan Burrow securing all three points at the Horsfall Stadium.

Steve Watson made three changes to his side; Kieran Green, Paddy Mclaughlin and Macaulay Langstaff all coming into the first eleven in a 4-2-1-3 formation.

The Minstermen kicked off their Boxing Day fixture on a very heavy surface in West Yorkshire, and looked promising in the early stages as McLaughlin struck the side netting with a shot outside the box just two minutes in.

Langstaff looked lively during the game, and nearly latched onto a back-pass by a Bradford defender – only Tom Nicholson between the sticks stopping the forward with a clearance under his heels.

Alex Hurst then went close for Bradford, picking up the ball on the left and dragging just wide of Pete Jameson’s far post.

There was a great opportunity minutes later to open the scoring with Kieran Green bursting through the Bradford defence on the right and firing across just in front of an incoming Jordan Burrow who slid in to try and meet the ball.

On 25 minutes City got a breakthrough when David Ferguson swung a free kick into the box which was headed goalbound, saved, and then followed in by Green.

After the first goal City went close again, two shots on the edge blocked which produced shouts for handball and Langstaff whistling a deflected shot just past the post.

Green was unlucky not to have a second on 43 minutes, the powerful midfielder rising up to head an in-swinging free kick onto the post.

Just before the break City seemed to have doubled their lead as Langstaff played in a low cross and Alex Kempster finished, but the linesman on the far side ruled it to be offside.

Just five minutes into the second half City managed to get that second goal after an inch-perfect cross by Kallum Griffiths found Jordan Burrow in the box who headed his ninth goal of the season past the goalkeeper.

Bradford looked certain to get a goal back on 52 minutes after Alex Hurst put the ball on a plate for Tom Clare, but the striker couldn’t make connection on a seemingly open goal at the back post and it went out for a goal kick.

A quick throw-in then set off Kempster down the right who crossed in to an incoming Langstaff who was tackled last ditch as he tried to get a shot away.

City then tested Bradford with an array of corners, but couldn’t convert as they dominated possession in the game.

The whistle blew after four minutes of added time giving City three points and keeping the pressure on at the top of the table.

Bradford will now visit Bootham Crescent on New Year’s Day after City’s Saturday fixture against Guiseley.
