Two goal City win at Blyth

By Ian Appleyard | 8th August 2017

Blyth Spartans 0 York City 2

GOALS from Jon Parkin and Sean Newton secured York City’s first victory of the season tonight at Blyth Spartans.

Parkin scored in the 15th minute with a low shot across the goalkeeper following a neat pass by Louis Almond.

Captain Newton doubled the advantage seven minutes later with a thumping low drive from the edge of the Blyth penalty area.

The Minstermen, who had lost their opening game of the season to AFC Telford United, never really looked in danger once they had established a two goal lead.

However, they were still indebted to goalkeeper Jon Worsnop for a couple of quality saves prior to Parkin’s goal.

Worsnop dashed off his line to deny Daniel Maguire in a one-versus-one situation and also produced a great reaction save to foil Maguire from close range.

With defender Hamza Bencherif passing a fitness test on a shoulder problem, City manager Gary Mills had named an unchanged side for the trip to Croft Park.

Blyth, promoted as champions of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, had not been beaten at home since losing to Altrincham in the FA Trophy tie eight months ago.

Striker Maguire had shaken off an ankle injury suffered in his side’s opening day defeat at Alfreton Town - but Jordan Laidler’s absence with a knee injury had prompted manager Blyth manager Alun Armstrong to sign Gateshead striker Macauley Langstaff on a month’s loan just hours before kick-off.

Mills shuffled his pack, pushing Newton into midfield alongside Simon Heslop and the impressive Adriano Moke.

Daniel Parslow and Bencherif played as centrebacks with Josh Law and Alex Whittle operating in advanced fullback roles.

Striker Amari Morgan-Smith could have increased City’s lead before the interval but had a shot saved by goalkeeper Peter Jameson and shot wide after being sent clear by Law.

Parkin was substituted early in the second half with a calf injury.  Kaine Felix, who took his place, suffered a cut to the head late in the game and was replaced by Jassem Sukar who made his debut.

Felix might have opened his goal account for the season midway through the second half but shot narrowly wide of the post after good work by Morgan-Smith and substitute Connor Smith.
