Blyth Spartans match information

By Ian Appleyard | 8th August 2017

York City return to Vanarama National League North action tonight with an away trip to Blyth Spartans (kick-off 7.45pm).

The two clubs have not locked horns since November 1978 when the Minstermen won an FA Cup first round replay 5-3 at Croft Park.

The Spartans are back in the sixth tier of English football for the first time in five years after winning last season's Evo-Stik Northern Premier League title.

Former Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough striker Alun Armstrong took over as the Spartans' manager just under 12 months ago.

Armstrong, now 42, also played on loan for Yorkshire clubs Bradford City, Huddersfield Town, and Doncaster Rovers.

The Spartans opened the season with a 2-0 defeat at Alfreton Town and also suffered injury blows when strikers Daniel Maguire and Jordan Laidler limped off.

City are sweating on the fitness of defender Hamza Bencherif (shoulder). Striker Michael Rankine is also a doubt with a hamstring problem.
