YORK City Football Club Foundation recently hosted a very successful knockout stage of the National League Trusts Under 11's Cup. The National League Trust Cup is a national tournament where primary schools compete to represent their local National League side, with a chance to reach the final, which is held at Wembley Stadium. Each club taking part held local competitions with successful teams progressing to regional finals as the stage before the Wembley Final.
The York regional finals were held at Huntington Secondary School with four talented teams playing for the chance to compete at the North East regional finals held at Lincoln City's Sincil Bank Stadium.
The first game saw Poppleton Road Primary face Ralph Butterfield Primary. It was an extremely close encounter with lots of chances for both teams. No teams were able to break the deadlock and the game ended a tie at 0-0. The penalty shootout proved too much for Poppleton Road and Ralph Butterfield made it through to the final with a 4-2 win.
The second game had the same intensity as the first with the added bonus of goals! Sutton on the Forest Primary were pitted against the formidable Copmanthorpe Primary. Copmanthorpe had plenty of the possession but it was Sutton on the Forest that were victors with a thrilling 3-0 win to advance to the final.
The final was a tough contest with goals for both teams. Ralph Butterfield edged out 3-1 in front and despite a late comeback attempt from Sutton on the Forest, Ralph Butterfield finished the game as 4-2 winners.
Teams from all over the North East descended on Lincoln with the hope of winning a place at the National League Cup Under 11's finals which is to be held at the famous Wembley Stadium in May.
York City's representatives, Ralph Butterfield, were drawn against Lincoln City, Harrogate Town and Guiseley. The first game was a close one against Guiseley and an own goal meant Ralph Butterfield were defeated 1-0. The second match was against Lincoln City and neither team were able to score and the game ended 0-0. The third game was another tough test against Harrogate Town and despite several shots on target for Harrogate, the game also ended 0-0. Ralph Butterfield advanced to the quarter finals on goal difference.
The quarter finals saw Ralph Butterfield up against National League North side Bradford Park Avenue's representatives. This was also another close game with end to end chances for both sides. Ralph Butterfield were confident that they would be able to take their opponents to penalties but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. With one minute to go, Bradford Park Avenue had a lucky deflection from a speculative shot and Ralph Butterfield had conceded only their second goal of the tournament and the game finished 1-0 to Bradford Park Avenue.
Even though we didn’t progress to the Finals at Wembley, the experience was enjoyed by all and it was a great opportunity for some of the local primary schools to take part in a well organised football tournament and we all look forward to next year’s competition.
