Match Report | AFC Fylde 0-2 York City

The Minstermen won 2-0 away at Mill Farm to AFC Fylde in the Vanarama National League on Saturday afternoon.

Goalkeeper George Sykes-Kenworthy returned between the sticks for the Minstermen, whilst Dipo Akinyemi and Scott Burgess also came in for David Stockdale, Lenell John-Lewis and Quevin Castro respectively.

City took the lead straight out the block after six minutes, Ryan Fallowfield dropped a superb cross into the area for the returning Scott Burgess to volley from point blank range.

The Minstermen continued their attacking start, winning a couple of corners around the 20th minute mark.

Resulting pressure concluded with Tyler Cordner volleying one on his weaker left foot wide of the mark, from inside the left-hand flank of the area.

Winger Kai Kennedy sparked a counterattack in the 27th minute, carrying the ball well until being crowded out of the Fylde box.

York doubled their lead a minute later in the 28th after Akinyemi’s driving run resulted in a cutback for the onrushing Fallowfield inside the area.

City’s free-flowing football continued to carve chances and openings in the Fylde defence’s box, with Alex Woodyard the next player to unleash an effort in the 43rd minute, however he guided that one over the bar.

Relatively unphased opening exchanges of the second half saw the Minstermen continue to compete well, with the hosts resorting to a pop shot from Danny Whitehead in the 56th minute which flew well over the bar.

Chris Beech’s side grew into the second half to control it, applying pressure on a stubborn Minstermen defence.

Nick Haughton won a free-kick down the left-hand flank in the 72nd minute, taking his won set-piece and whipping it over Sykes-Fairweather’s bar as the hosts continued to try and threaten.

Sykes-Kenworthy then pulled out a reactive low-down save in the 81st minute, a header from substitute Gold Omotayo, to deny the hosts an opening into the game.

Burgess and substitute Lenell John-Lewis could’ve notched a third to wrap up the three points in the 85th minute after Burgess’ cross wasn’t taken advantage of by the forward.
